FDA Approves VariZIG for Reducing Chickenpox Infections Posted 1/8/13
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved VariZIG, a varicella zoster immune globulin preparation, for reducing the severity of chickenpox (varicella zoster virus [VZV]) infections in high risk individuals. Infection severity is reduced when VariZIG is given within 96 hours of exposure to VZV.
While most people in the US have immunity to VZV from having received vaccination or from having had chickenpox, people with no immunity may experience severe infections if exposed to VZV. VariZIG is approved for immune-compromised children and adults, pregnant women, premature infants, newborns, children younger than one year of age, and adults with no immunity to VZV.
